Photonic chips

Presentation

The research topic is developed at IES labs and is focused on the development of integrated optical circuits or photonic chips using numerical design tools and photolithography based fabrication process.

Photonics is regarded as the field gathering the different techniques that permit to emit, transport, manipulate and detect photons. The developed optical chips are mainly dedicated to manipulation functions. They are composed of optical waveguides and dielectric structures integrated on a wafer using planar technology.

Passive circuits functions are based on light confinement, guiding, interference, and diffraction. Active circuits use specific materials so as to control the optical functions through properties such as thermo-optic, scaterring, non-linear, etc effects. Physical, chemical, biological, etc interactions can also be used to realise detectors and sensors. The main applications are in telecommunication, sensor and instrumentation fields.
